Celebrating Freedom and Advancing Rights This 4th of July

As we gather to celebrate Independence Day - a day symbolizing freedom, justice, and equality - we pause to reflect on what freedom really means for everyone in our community.

For many, freedom is a given. But for unhoused individuals, freedom is often limited by the daily struggle for shelter, safety, and dignity. This year, a significant legal ruling reminds us how crucial it is to protect the rights of people experiencing homelessness.

Understanding the Impact of Grants Pass v. Johnson

Recently, the Grants Pass v. Johnson case brought disappointing news. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of a city ordinance that criminalized sleeping and camping in public spaces when no adequate shelter was available. This decision denied a fundamental truth: you cannot punish people for simply trying to survive when there is nowhere else to go.

This decision means that people experiencing homelessness can be punished simply for trying to survive—without access to safe alternatives. It’s a stark reminder that many in our community still face barriers to basic human rights and dignity.

Anchorage is facing a critical shortage of housing and shelter options. There simply aren’t enough beds for everyone in need - especially as rising rents and an overburdened behavioral health system make the situation even more urgent. Criminalizing people for sleeping outside when they have no safe alternative isn’t just ineffective - it’s an inhumane abuse of human rights.

What we need isn’t more punishment; we need real solutions that provide safety, dignity, and hope.

This 4th of July, while we celebrate our nation’s ideals, we must also stand firm against policies that restrict freedom and punish our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness.

We continue to fight for compassionate solutions that respect and uplift all individuals. Our work to provide shelter, meals, and social support is more critical than ever as we advocate for justice and human dignity.

Thank You for Standing with Us

On this Independence Day, we thank you for your compassion and commitment to justice. Together, we can build a community where everyone has the freedom to live with dignity. Help us walk beside those we serve by donating, volunteering, and advocating.

Wishing you a meaningful and hopeful 4th of July,
