Supporting Survivors Experiencing Homelessness

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and a critical time to advocate for those experiencing homelessness. Survivors of sexual violence are disproportionately affected by housing instability, making safe shelter and support services vital to their healing. Lack of stable housing increases vulnerability to further exploitation and violence, underscoring the urgent need for community action and systemic change.

This month, we are strengthening our commitment to ensuring access to trauma-informed care, emergency housing, and resources for those in need. We believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home, and we are dedicated to breaking the cycle of homelessness and abuse through comprehensive support services, advocacy, and education.

Resources for Survivors

Sexual violence is both a cause and consequence of homelessness. Many survivors face eviction, financial abuse, or must flee unsafe environments, leaving them without stable housing. Once unhoused, individuals—especially women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and youth—are at heightened risk of further victimization. Addressing this crisis requires trauma-informed support, legal protections, and accessible housing solutions that prioritize survivors' safety and well-being.

For those seeking support, the following resources are available:

  • Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (ANDVSA): Providing legal assistance, advocacy, and crisis support for survivors. Visit www.andvsa.org or call (907) 586-3650.

  • Standing Together Against Rape (STAR): Offering 24/7 crisis intervention, advocacy, and education for survivors of sexual violence. Call (907) 276-7273 or visit www.staralaska.com.

  • Covenant House Alaska: Emergency shelter and long-term housing support for unhoused youth. Learn more at www.covenanthouseak.org or call (907) 272-1255.

  • Alaska 2-1-1: A statewide resource helpline connecting individuals with housing, food, and crisis services. Dial 211 or visit www.alaska211.org.

By working together, we can help build a future where no survivor has to choose between safety and stability. We urge our community members to remain engaged, informed, and committed to uplifting those who need us most. Addressing homelessness and sexual violence requires not just immediate action but also long-term systemic change. We will continue pushing for policies that protect survivors, expanding our outreach programs, and fostering a community where healing is possible for all.

Walking together,
