December is Universal Human Rights Month, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of advocating for the rights of the people we serve. From our lived experience and peer support model for housing and workforce development to providing meals for over 150 children across Title 1 schools, we are deeply committed to improving the lives of Alaskans and ensuring that all human rights are respected. As a second-chance employer, we continue to demonstrate this dedication in everything we do. One of the most recent ways we’ve proven our commitment is by helping another provider fill their 100-bed contract with the city, ensuring that no Alaskan has to endure the harsh winter conditions alone.
A Heartfelt Thanksgiving Meal
On Thanksgiving, our team worked together to prepare and serve a warm and hearty meal to over 400 Alaskans. Meals were provided at each of the locations we operate including the Golden Lion, the Henning House, Merrill Field, and the Alex Hotel. I want to give a special shout out to Sarah Hall-Wright, Crystal Abbott, Shayla Freirich, and Danny Harris who worked to cook all items which included over 25 hams, numerous pans of mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, stuffing, and a 40-pound pot of gravy. Danny brought his family to help cook!
After the meals were put into to-go containers, teams from each location handed out the meals to residents. Ana Vanilau, Program Manager at the Henning House and Next Step, made a buffet style line to ensure that clients were able to choose what items they wanted as part of their meal. And, of course, we didn’t forget about dessert—what’s a holiday meal without a slice of pie?
Roads Conditions and Community Safety
In recent weeks, Anchorage has been grappling with dangerous road conditions. Freezing rain has made the roads treacherously slick, creating serious safety hazards for drivers and pedestrians alike. This year, tragically, 14 of our friends and neighbors have lost their lives after being struck while walking in the city. As we work toward a more equitable and compassionate Anchorage, it's crucial that we keep our community members safe, both on and off the roads. We encourage everyone to take extra precautions when traveling during these harsh winter conditions.
New Leadership to Lead the Way
Last week, we said a bittersweet goodbye to Rob Seay, who has been our Deputy Executive Director since our founding in 2020. Rob’s leadership has been instrumental in supporting my vision for Henning and the work we’re doing to create a more just and compassionate Anchorage. While we’re sad to see him go, we are excited to see what lies ahead for him on his next journey.
I’m thrilled to announce that Crystal Abbott, our Operations Director for the past three years, will be stepping up as our new Deputy Executive Director. Crystal’s dedication, heart, and incredible skills have been key in our mission, and she has consistently supported our staff through challenges, leading us to success. I have no doubt she will take our work to the next level and continue to build on the foundation we’ve created together.
We are incredibly proud of all the work we’ve accomplished so far, and we remain committed to improving the lives of all Alaskans. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission.
Walking beside you,
Shawn Hays
